How Anonymous Chat Works

On Chatlek, "anonymous" has a specific, practical meaning. You never create an account, never provide an email address, and never set a password. Joining takes a display name, an age, a gender, an avatar, and a country, and every one of those fields is self-reported. Nothing is checked against an ID or a database, so the only identity attached to your conversation is whatever you typed into that form a moment ago.

That's different from services that call themselves anonymous but still ask for an email address behind the scenes, or that assign you a persistent user ID that survives across visits. On Chatlek, there is no persistent ID. Each visit starts a new session, and that session is the entire extent of who you are on the platform.

When you submit the join form, the server creates a session and hands your browser a token. That token, stored in local storage, is what keeps you signed in while the tab is open. It isn't a tracking cookie in the advertising sense: it doesn't follow you to other sites, and it isn't used to build a profile of your behavior. Its only job is to prove to the server that this browser belongs to this particular temporary session.

Because the token lives in your browser and not in a shared account system, closing the tab or clearing your browser data effectively ends your presence on Chatlek, even before any server-side timeout kicks in.

Anyone browsing the live directory sees your display name, age, gender, avatar, and country, the same fields you filled in. They do not see an email address, an IP address, or any browsing history, because Chatlek never collects those in a way that's shown to other users. If you chat with someone, they see your messages and the profile details above; nothing else.

It's worth being direct about what this system does not do. Because age, gender, and country are self-reported, Chatlek cannot verify that any of it is accurate, and neither can you, about the person you're talking to. Anonymity here means no account and no persistent tracking, not verified identity. You must be at least 16 to use Chatlek, but that, too, relies on what someone enters at the join form.
